In addition to being creative director of his own haute streetwear line Off-White™, launched for spring 2014, Virgil Abloh is also Kanye West’s creative director, collaborating on all things Kanye, from his tours to his album covers. The two began working together in 2003 when Abloh started designing merchandise for West. Back then, Abloh was a graduate student in architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He also deejayed and continues to do so. As West became more indoctrinated into fashion, so did Abloh, joining West at Fendi for an internship in 2009. A mix of music, luxury, populist street and skate culture and branding — specifically, graphic diagonal black-and-white stripes — are key to Off-White’s aesthetic. The label’s profile has risen considerably in recent years, with Abloh qualifying as a finalist in the 2015 LVMH Prize. He is also the guest designer at Pitti Uomo this year.
