In the 37 years since Carolina Herrera established her label, her name has become synonymous with elegance, impeccable taste and ladylike polish. Born in Venezuela, Herrera moved to the United States in 1980 with her husband Reinaldo Herrera and their four daughters. A year later, upon the encouragement of her friend Diana Vreeland, Herrera designed a small fashion collection.
Her business, owned by the Spanish group Puig, now does $1.4 billion in sales. Over the years, she has dressed Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and her daughter Caroline Kennedy, who wore Carolina Herrera for her wedding, as well as Michelle Obama and Renee Zellweger, whom Herrera dressed for three different Academy Awards ceremonies.
The bow Herrera took after her spring 2018 runway show, which included a finale of models dressed in one of her signature looks — a perfect white shirt and ball skirt — was her last as creative director of the collection. She gracefully passed the baton to Wes Gordon and assumed a new role at the company as global brand ambassador.
